Hi all,

1992 Jap Spec mini SPI here. As the topic title explains, i'm finding it very difficult to select the reverse gear. 1 through 4 happens just fine. With or without the engine running, I can go through the H perfectly fine. But i can only select reverse maybe 1 out of 10 tries, or worse. It didn't use to be like this.

Took a peek underneath and the roll pin seems to be in place.

Any ideas where i should look?

Best,

Kopi

Hi

May or may not be right but could be the reverse gear idler, it is fitted with two bronze bushes (Later cars) and they tend to slide out making it difficult or impossible to select reverse. When I rebuilt my gearbox and on a friends advice I changed mine for an idler that was fitted in the earlier gearbox's which has one single bush instead of the two apparently the problem does not occur with the single bush design.

Check that the clutch slave isn't leaking and try bleeding it through.

Would the remote not have an effect on all gears, likewise the clutch slave leaking? Kopi is saying 1, 2, 3 and 4 are fine.

Reverse doesn't have a synchro, so will show up clutch drag more - idle speed can also affect it.

Depends what's wrong with the selector, reverse is at its limit of movement. So again, can be the first to show up excess play.

Reverse idler will make moving the stick back and forth stiff and can make it hard to get back in to neutral.

Clutch drag disappears with the engine off, or with the car rolling (backwards in this case) at the right speed.

The selector may make the stick loose, even when in gear. The reverse gate requires the stick lifting over a tab on the cover plate screwed to the underside of the selector, check the plate hasn't been battered upwards.

Thanks gents.

The shifting is not stiff and returning to neutral is easy (assuming I get it in reverse in the first place). And the problem is the same regardless of whether the engine is off or on. I assume this eliminates reverse idler and clutch drag?

The selector plate looks fine. Doesn't seem bashed in or anything.

That's what Spider means, yes.  It's a bit of a fiddly job but worth doing.
