Hi, I wondered if anyone can give me some advice or opinions etc?

I currently have a 25 litre electric compressor. I'm going to get a new one soon as I will be spraying a couple of cars. I usually use a mates booth with a 200 litre compressor.

I'm thinking of getting a 150 l petrol compressor. Alternatively a electric one and running it off a generator.

Has anyone had any experience in doing this- what's the better option?

I didn't want to spend a great deal as I would prob only use it a few times each year- so although I'd prefer a Honda engine- compressor, I was thinking of a cheaper option- there is a few new ones on eBay With orange tanks, but un branded engines for around the £300 mark- does any one else have anything similar- would you trust a cheaper make?

Or I could get an electric compressor and run it off an Honda genny- I will prob end up getting a generator for my other gear anyway- even if I do get a petrol compressor- but would the compressor run just as well of a genny as it would with a petrol engine bolted on?

If anyone has any experience or ideas about my predicament then please can you give me some suggestions? Thanks, matt

a compressor of 150-200 litres is not something your going to be moving about, and i take it,  where it is, you have no power

with a 150-200l compressor you need a 3hp motor to be able to refill that tank quick enough, i have a 3hp 150L clarke compressor , and 3hp motor is the biggest you can run on house hold 240v,

i have mine running on a 16amp plug ( like a caravan hookup plug)and some decent size cable as well, it has its own fuse from the fuse box on a 30 amp trip,

i picked mine up from machine mart on the VAT free days so was a good bargain,

so if you need power for the compressor and to run other things you need a genny anyway, but it will have to be a half decent power to run a compressor and other electrics.

if you have power, you really need to run the compressor on its own line from the fuse box, it will trip you main ring main in your house.

you have to weight up how much a petrol compressor is, to a electric one and a genny

Yeh, i dont have power as im going to be working in a barn too far from electrisity - the benifits is that it wont matter too much about the noise and paint fumes, but iwill have to use petrol gear.

on eBay I'm looking at a 3hp electric 90 litre burish compressor and then at a 5.5 hp petrol LTS UK 200 l, and there is only about£100 difference between the two. Obviously a half decent generator would prob set me back £250+ and I'm thinking if I have a compressor that size running off the genny - then would I still have enough power to mayby run some site lights and a extraction fan?

I'm assuming that burish is a better make than the petrol compressor, as it's about £300? And I think that 90litres would do what I need- but obviously it would be running more- with the smaller tank.

But then a 200 litre tank petrol with 5.5 hp is more industrial- and for £400 it seems tempting- but if it's just a crap make and is going to pack up after a while- then its a waste of money- although ive just seen that it has a 2year warranty

So there isn't all that much difference in it money wise- so now I suppose the question is personal preference over petrol power or electric compressors? - I'm still a bit un decided - but leaning more towards petrol now!

Thanks dean for your help!

Any other thoughts guys? Thanks

A petrol or diesel powered one would be the go over an electric one from a Generator, you'd need a surprisingly big generator only to get the motor started.

If you think you only need it a few times a year, why not hire one?

its the air flow that you should look at as well, no good having a big tank if it cant deliver the high flow rate needed to run a spray gun and tools
