I have fitted a 1275 engine from a 1992 SPI  into my son's 998. I have rebuilt the engine and to keep things easy and on the advice of John Erra at David Manners I am going to fit a bypass pipe from the head to the water pump. I have the spigot but I'm not sure what the thread is, I imagine its a BSPP? My thread gauges are saying 16 TPI which is 3/8" BSW.

Anyone already done this mod or have any idea what the thread is?

Dave

Don't bother. That by-pass has been a right PITA since the A-series engine was first made. The later cars don't have it and are more reliable for it.

Would agree, not require so don't give yourself unnecessary work and possible future grief

Ah well its a bit too late not to bother as I've drilled the pilot hole and also drilled out the blank for the 998 type heater valve. John was on about drilling holes in the thermostat which sounded like a bit of a gash job so I moved onto the old way of doing it.

So anyone know what the thread size is?

Seriously. Just bung them back up. You are making problems for yourself.

They are the biggest useless pain of a thing to deal with.

+1

You seriously do not want a by-pass hose of any sort. When the by-pass hose fails, and it does and will, it is serious aggravation trying to change it and to fit a proper solid-wall type hose you have to either take the radiator and water pump off or remove the cylinder head - and all for no advantage whatsoever.
