[Awlred Drives a Quant]

The other day I noticed that when I come off the accelerator in my mini, theres a rough whiney noise, kinda like a wire brush on metal sound. When I press the clutch pedel down it disappears after a couple of second but as soon as I release the pedal the sound comes back. This only seems present on Gears 2, 3 & 4, reverse and first seem to be unaffected. Any ideas?

Could just be the typical mini gearbox wine, which they all do a bit.

Although if it is clutch related, don't ask I’ve just had to do mine and don't really fancy do a another just yet.

If it goes when you press the clutch then it's failry likely to be the idler, do you hear the noise when the car is stationary ?

No, sat idle its not there, its only noticable when the rev's drop although the idle is slightly erratic

this is what mines doing the bloke i got it from is checking it so ill let u know be warned it got alot worse with mine and so bad it wudntr go into gear.

The idler is nothing to do with idle mate, it's part of the gear train. You probably just can't hear it in first or reverse as these are both straight cut gears and so much louder than the others. I also think it could be the idler gear.

I meant to follow up on this, i'm not sure what it was, but I pulled it out of gear without using the clutch and it cleared it immediatly, haven't had a problem since. But thanks everyone

Didn’t really notice any funny noises while out in yours today, only it has more low end grunt and sounds beefier than mine does.
