Should both the verto and pre-verto type clutches have a return spring on top of the lever arm? Mine seems to be missing.

I'm not sure if mine is a verto or pre-verto, its a 1979 850 engine.

I sometimes get a burning clutch smell on long journeys, and a slight judder when pulling off in 1st, so could that be caused by the missing spring?

Pre-Verto and it should have a Spring, though that won't be the cause of the burning smell.

<Edit: When you get this smell next time, see if the clutch is slipping. Easist way to do that is while driving in 3rd or 4th gear, just easy the clutch pedal down a little and slowly, don't lift the throttle, as soon as you hear the engine revs rise, 'drop' the clutch (ie, get your foot off it as rapidly as you can), you should hear the engine revs drop sharply and suddenly to match the cars road speed. If the revs slowly come down, then the clutch is slipping. >

To test a clutch all I do is fire the car up and try to pull away with the hand brake on... The car should cut out if the clutch is ok, if the engine stays running and your foot is off the clutch its time to check the adjustments and then repeat the above, does the motor die or can your foot be lifted off the pedal?

No-one has yet answered the first question. The Verto must not have an external spring, and the pre-Verto must have the external tension spring between the lever and a tag on the slave cylinder.

So mine should definitely have the spring. I will have to order one.

Moke & Cal, I have tested it before when it was smelling, and I really couldn't get it to slip. Engine died if I left the h/brake on, and if I try that trick of seeing how quickly the revs drop, they drop straight away.

It only does it when driving fast. The nearest thing I can describe the smell to is a hot water bottle! A sort of hot rubber smell.
