G'day

Recently joined up so I hope only to be berated somewhat for asking a relatively tired question from what I imagine.

So have a 998 A+ with no mods.

Going to go for extractors, exhaust etc (typical stage one) most certainly and in reading Vizard's book the next thing to do (he suggests first) is head change and cam.

On offer is a 12g295 head (there are actually 3 on offer, one skimmed with larger valves and the others are just normal) from a MG Midget 1275 '67.

Also is a pair of twin HS4's and a fast single id road cam.

All this I would be blind buying online and having sent to me, here in NZ from the UK.

The head options are skimmed with larger valves, or, totally original. Have not been told the valve volume to see if can fit on my 998 or how much has been skimmed - if this cannot be ascertained is it best to go with the unskimmed one and do it over here?

1275 drop-in would be ideal but they are super rare here as is getting a cylinder head.

I could easily just go typical stage one but how much of a torque increase would that get me (as this is my main problem I want to address).

But given I can get cylinder head, cam and twin carbs perhaps at a good price, and given this would be the next upgrade, it is a worth an ask and a look, however unfortunate I cannot expect nor measure anything on these heads up for grabs.

Also welcome any advice too as in, just do stage one and you'll be fine etc.

Main use for car is road use with a bit of extra sting/oomph to its current setup.

Also looked on Calver's Corner and the idea of keeping the oval air intake over a cone or pancake, but drilling 3/4" holes into the cover (6 of them where the air magic actually happens, not willy nilly) makes for a screamer and can in fact aid somewhat.

Cheers!

Stage one kit is normally quoted as 20% power increase, around 10-15% torque increase, and it's easy to fit, engine stays in the car etc. E.g.

http://www.minispare...ts/C-STN17.aspx

Twin HS4 would be overkill on a road spec 998 engine, you'd be better off with twin HS2 or a single HIF38 or 44. If you were only doing the stage one kit I'd keep the single HS4.

My car has a 998 with a stage one kit and the early 3.76 diff ratio and it goes pretty well. I installed mine in half a day. The short diff means it gets off the line well and revs about 4000rpm at 60mph. As a cost per performance increase it's hard to go past the stage one kit, after that it gets more expensive for less gain on a 998. I'd suggest you try the kit first and see how you go from there.

There are plenty of threads discussing the 12G295 head, you do need to skim it a fair amount to work with a 998. A 1275 Midget would not have a 295 head fitted, it would have a 12G940 head..

Make sure its a 295, if a 940 you'll need pocketing the block or recessing the exhaust valves

Thanks for the tips guys, will ensure it is really what it is stated to be.

Helps a lot when others have had similar engines and similar ideas and going with the first kit first is a reasonable idea, may just be all I need.

Will sit on the idea of head vs. 1275 depending on patience for one to crop up here.

Cheers!
