What's people's view having a few troubles sorting the spi out ticks over but under acceleration or in gear it cuts out is it worth converting to carb or pursuing to fix the spi unit.

Fix it in my opinion, but plenty of people have converted

How's the service condition of your car? Vac pipes in nothing short of perfect condition?

Check all the sensors and connectorsa te all good, check you loom and earth points

I'd say fix it, although in some cases is far easier to convert to carbs, it will devalue the car and give issues at the MOT

Well the engine stood for 6 years and besides me plugging it all back together and fitting it to my project EKO with a different exhaust with new manifold gasket and gear selector seals I have checked the fluid levels then fired it up. It has a k&n filter fitted and the red vac pipe is missing I managed to block this off but probably need to do it better. The white link vac pipe is fine and one of the 90° rubber bends on the green vac to ecu has snapped so I have pushed it in the remains part the car hasn't had a service (oil n filter plugs leads n dis cap) should I really start there first n see how I get on. Cars current state is it starts then runs for about 10 seconds then dies I'm not sure if it has any kind of alarm I do have two key fobs as it has central locking and it did have a red led on top of the speedo clocks I had disconnected this at the moment as it was spliced into the original wiring loom very badly and I assumed this was an after market fit item. I do however have a black box of tricks inside the car with a long plug connected to the wiring harness what's that for ? Also have a plug behind the clocks that doesn't go nowhere is this the original factory alarm plug?

The fact that it starts and runs means that the alarm/immobilser is working or has been bypassed, either way not what's causing your current issue.

Definitely start with a good service, including valve clearance and fuel filter.

Do you have access to a code reader?

You mention that various items might be missing, snapped or unserviced - probably best if you have a look at these straightforward items first, particularly the vacuum hoses, breather hoses, fuel trap etc. SPIs are great once these types of problems are bottomed out.

There should be a round connector in the engine bay, usually protected by a rubber cover, thats where you plug the reader

Have to look for a picture

Stragely havent got a pic, anyway if you scroll this thread:

http://www.theminifo...oint-injection/

You'll find a picture showing a green connector for the alarm reader, now (you dont see in the pic-have a look at your car) if you look closer to the brake master cylinder there will be a similar plug in white hanging there.
