Want to get one for on board footage, but not sure what to go. Want to mount on the diagonal on the rear part of the roll cage. Are they easy to set up and how do you edit them ( can it be done on the camera). Any advice much appreciated.

I have a couple of hero 3s, they are a doddle to set up but you have to download the video to edit it. I don't know of any action cams you can edit on the camera but there may be some. They are very robust, one of mine has been down the start finish straight at Rockingham after it was knocked off in a shunt and still works perfectly.

Can only speak from experience using the bog standard GoPro Hero.

Yes very easy to use.....pretty much just on and off.

No you can't edit 'in camera' as it has no screen!!!.

Mounting it in car....not done that yet but going to make a DIY mounting and doubt it will be tricky.....you can buy proper roll bar mounts though.

I think you might find there are other options that might prove better than a GoPro though......I see alot of the rally crowd using other brands rather than go pro (not that i can remember what those brands are!!!).

I only bought my Hero as it was super cheap.

Bugger, if you'd have put this up last week i'd have sold you my old ones! (Hero 3 Blacks). Just upgraded to the newHero 4 blacks. I use suction mounts and sticky mounts in aircraft with great effect. On a roll cage you can get mounts specifically for them, which oddly are exactly the same as the ones used for cycles. I also tend to use the wifi a lot as I can set up the image before I set off and use it to turn the camera off/on as well as take stills. The GoPro editing software is a little tricky to get used to, however it is quite powerful once you get used to it. I would always advise getting the best quality/speed/storage size microcards for them.

This is a playback still from the phone. The actual photo is around 4MP if i remember correctly.

Don't be put off with the cheaper versions of the GoPro as it depends how much you're going to use it. I bought a sj4000 for under £60 earlier in the year and it's spot on.

It came with 2 batteries and you can link it to your phone. They're that good they even make fake ones of them.

Compare with a GoPro:

I bought mine from here as I believe it's not fake:

From my own experience, don't waste your time with a Gopro - they really are over priced rubbish. I persevered with mine for over 18 months and lost a shed load of golden moments. I'm over it and it's gone where I should have shoved it 18 months prior. Over-rated rubbish.

A mate of mine bought a Gopro knock-off for less than 20% the price of a Gopro, I was amazed at how good it was and in fact, put the Gopro to shame - it actually worked and worked well, first time, every time.

These are also pretty good for In car work, but not cheap (though cheaper than a Gopro)

I am told that these are the same (or similar) to the ones used by many TV programs, like Top Gear,

GoPros are epic!  Super simple to set up, great footage and with some editing, can make some great pieces.  I would advise using something better than the bundled editing software but it works ok.  I use Final Cut Pro for mine but everyone likes different things.

Only thing I hate, is the sound quality.  The slightest breath of wind ruins everything :(  I get round this by recording audio using my iPhone inside the car, then pair it up to the video in Final Cut. Looks great, sounds great :)

As mine is wifi I use a couple of apps on my phone, one to change the format over then I use Kinemaster App for the editing as its pretty idiot proof and has pretty much all the basic features I need for tittles or adding to youtube

Looks good, I need to get into editing with mine.

I've started to use mine on my daily - too many idiots around.

Another good function that I noticed (I'm sure the go pros have this as well) is the car function, when you plug it in it starts recording straight away.

I vote against the gopro, have already gone thru 3 of them and their warranty sucks. my cheap one works perfect and vibrates when turned on and off so no more struggling looking at a miniature screen.
