Dear all,

I recently turned 17 and with that comes driving lessons, hooray!

I am a petrolhead and very much hoping to purchase a classic Mini for my first car so any suggestions of what to look for, or any good suggestions about what is currently on the market is always appreciated!

Looking forward to hearing from anyone,

Micah

Hi Micah and welcome to TMF.

Where to start, well first thing is budget, then you are looking for the best car you can get for your money. Steer clear of modified cars as this will help to keep your insurance down. Look for 998's as these tend to be cheaper overall to insure.

Condition and rust is everything and leads to the most heartache and hard work. So looking for a car with minimum rust is essential. Unless of course you can weld or have a family member who can.

Mechanically the carb cars are simple to maintain and easier to fix from an engine point of view.

There are lots of other things but what you are looking at is a very basic mechanical car which is ideal for learning how to maintain and of course modify.

Ebay, Gumtree are good starting points. We do have a classified section on here as well so worth perusing.

Definitely look for rust free or very little rust. Thats was my main point when I was looking for one. Also try to find one as original as possible so you can do whatever you want to it. Like a blank canvas. Also you won't have too worry about someone else's mess ups.

Great choice on a first car.

It won't be long till some owners that weren't even born when the mini was in production. I feel old!

Have you tried some of the forums dedicated to the BMW mini ?

On here we are mainly about the classic mini although someone might still be able to help you
