Best Answer monster_mini , 22 January 2016 - 04:41 PM

I'm hugely embarrassed to say it turned out that the main battery earth did not have a good connection to the boot floor and thats all it was!

I'll admit that the owner of the car actually fitted the strap so not all my fault, but regardless i wished i'd checked this before i came on here asking for help!!! atleast hopefully someone else can learn from my mistakes!! problem solved!!

Hi All

I've just restored a cooper sport 2000 mpi. Everything was working before the strip 2 years ago,

I connected the battery, tried everything except turning it on and it worked perfectly except horn.

The battery in my immobileser fob had died, so I couldn't try and start, bought a new one and the immobileser worked perfectly, flashing the indicators ect,

Went to turn the car over and all I got was 1 reasonably loud click and now all electrics have died, everything!

When you put a multimeter on the starter motor or any of the 4, 30 amp fuses, the voltage is only reading 3volts, however remove the first fuse (which I believe is for passenger compartment fuse box from research I've done) the Other 3 go back up to 12.5 volts.

Help!!!

More information to help..... It's got a new starter, alternator, coil pack ect. The only things not connected currently are HT leads aren't attached as planning on cranking it over to start with to get oil pressure) and front spotlights.

I said, everything was working perfectly until I tried to turn the starter motor, and now something is drawing power. All 30amp fuses still perfect

Kind regards

Nick

Is the starter "stuck" - try rocking in gear in case.

Hi Nick,

Just to clarify - if you put your multimeter on the positive terminal of the starter motor and Earth you now get 3v? You should definitely be getting 12-14v regardless as it's direct from the battery. When you say fuse 1, do you mean the far left one? If so, that one powers the driving lamps, alarm and horn, cooling fan and hazards, stereo, clock, brake tester, interior light and alarm light.

This may take a fair bit of diagnostics, but I would check the continuity of every fuse in the car to make sure you have a good system. Re-check all earths making sure they have full direct metal contact.
