Hi folks,

(Sorry mods if this is in the wrong section)

My wife and I run a very small, local, clothing design business in our spare time designing various logos and graphics to print on to uniforms and kits most often for local clubs and organisations. Recently I've had the idea to perhaps start producing the odd few lines (hoodies, Tees, beanies, bags) for various car scenes starting with (obviously) the mini!! then perhaps branching out into VW, Binis, Drift cars etc etc and selling them online.  I've been working on a couple of designs and have come up with the images you see below and would appreciate your opinions/feedback on the designs, likes and dislikes also Would you buy them? Would you wear them? How many of you wear 'scene' clothing? Would a fitted or tailored t-shirt/hoodie be favourable to a standard fit, at a slight premium? All images would be printed on plain black garments.

The thought behind these designs was to try to create something a little different from what was out there already and hopefully end up with a finished item that appealed to a wide audience and was actually fairly trendy!! I've had a few sample tees made up so I'll upload a photo of one once its been photographed.

All and any feedback is gratefully received!! thanks in advance!

Jamie

Can never have enough mini t shirts!!!
Designs look fantastic - different to the normal. What would your retail price be for adult T's and would you do kids sizes?

Thanks guys! A T-shirt would go for no more than £15 (dependant on fit as tailored/fitted are more expensive to produce) including UK main land delivery. Kids sizes is a definite possibility depending on demand for them but it shouldn't be a problem.

Good price for something different. I'll certainly be a customer! Looking forward to seeing other designs too.

Here's a couple of shots of the sample tees, still some tweaks needed (they also need ironing!!) but just to give an idea...

I really don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but I believe you will need to look closely into whether you can do this for Minis or not. The brand name and anything to do with it belongs to BMW. I know in the past they have come down hard on anyone making profit from their brand illegally (I can see their point; brand reputation costs millions). You may have small royalties to pay which you'll need to bear in mind. They may not be interested, but it is better to know in advance. That aside, the designs are good.

I may be completely off, and it may just be the name and the MINI rather than the pictures of the original classics.

It would be sad if that were the case

I thought the photographer had the rights for a photo ?

is the mini , your own car new game mini ?

if so you are just using your picture , of your car - with no reference to the mini brand ?

or am I wrong - do they have copyright of the generic mini shape ?

in which case no-one can sell a pic of their own car on a tee shirt ?

Hi guys, thanks for the feedback it's much appreciated. This is definitely something I've considered. Although it is a minefield, from what I have researched it seems that as long as I do not reference any existing brand names in my designs/images or reproduce/steal an image that isn't my own without permission (I own the car and image the above designs were based around) and do not open an official 'mini store' (therefore affiliating myself with their brand) I should be OK. It's a very VERY fine line but I believe I'm the right side of it :D

That's good news. I'm not fully up on the copyright laws, just aware that BMW do ensure copyright royalties are paid up or the business shut down.

Best of luck to you!
