The last Land Rover Defender has rolled off the production line in Solihull to cheers and applause.

Fireworks exploded to mark the moment 67 years of British motoring history came to an end.

Jaguar Land Rover has discontinued the 4x4, which has been sold around the world.

Now watch the price of them climb. I'd love one.

It does seem as though the 'proper' 4 x 4's are being phased out in favour of the 'style statements' now offered by the major manufacturers.

I have a friend who is a farmer and he bought a new Discovery. Previously he has had real Discos which had high profile tyres with an aggressive tread pattern as standard, diff locks which can be manually engaged before the vehicle starts to struggle in mud. His new one, he says, is far less off-road capable and he had to tow it out of a field with a tractor when he feels his older version would simply have driven out without any issue.

The price of the proper Land Rovers is going up at an alarming rate. However, you can still buy an early Discovery, like the 300TDi, at a sensible price as I did recently for £750. I think these will also increase in price as they become more 'classic'. Mine is 19 years old this year, but there is no rust and everything works as it should. And it's fun, especially off-road! I'll post a photo later.

Childish remarks to say the least, they are utility vehicles at the end of the day.

Sad times. But I like how they have styled it with a nod to the series 1

WPD, I'd hazard a guess that was a mickey take rather than real. Cooperman, I know a lot of stuff is about style these days, but these finished because they just can't meet new laws which are only going to get tougher. Style as well as functionality is important to people these days. There's no point dwelling on it and letting it bother you though. At the end of the day, everyone is free to do as they wish with their car. If it suits someone's purpose, then fine. The only time it ever annoys me is when you see people that clearly can't park something that big. If you can't drive a bigger car, don't!

It was a total mickey-take, as you might expect from 'sniff petrol'

The average 4 x 4 has become less good when properly off-road, but that is what the market demands. However, if you are someone who needs to go seriously off road, like a farmer for example, it must be hard to decide what to buy as a utility vehicle. I guess the pick-ups from Toyota are still capable in mud and snow.

Here is my classic (soon) Discovery, not bad for £750:

The new Land Rover Defender will arrive in 2018.......The first new Defender isn’t expected to arrive until 2018, and it will spawn a family of at least three individual models. McGovern said: “The Defender is all about durability – that indestructible, durable vehicle which is what a family of Defenders would be.”
Land Rover is planning to introduce an entire new family of Defenders, and design boss Gerry McGovern has hinted that a performance SVR version of the forthcoming 4x4 could also be on the cards.
Yet the car will remain a true off-roader. While exact details are still secret, the new Defender is likely to have an aluminium body built on an aluminium chassis. This would give go-anywhere strength with less weight than from a traditional 4x4 steel chassis.
“When you see the new Defender, people will know it’s worthy of carrying the badge,” explained McGovern. “It will be able to do everything it says on the tin.”

This was reported on BBC. Whilst the body/ID might be "the first diesel" Landy, it doesn't have its original engine. So its engine is the only thing that makes it unique isn't even original. What a joke
