Hi,

Last year I put a new RHD vinyl dash in my Mini Cooper MPi (1998) and ever since then when I've been driving, and until I get up to 50mph it makes a crazy, tick, tick, tick noise like a train on a track! Things which point out in the obvious to me would be the speedo cable being loose or something as the ticking noise is coming from the dial? I tried turning it round today/tightening it up. However, It didn't solve the problem as it just made the ticking noise when driving a tiny bit quieter. The red speedo stick wobbles round crazy as well until 50mph left to right, is that right?

Anyone on here got any ideas what the problem could be? Speedo cable broke?

Thanks,

Rich

Unscrew or unclip the speedo cable from the back of the dials, using a pair of pliers gently pull the inner cable/spring free and then pour some 3in1 one oil down the outer cable before sliding the cable back in. The inner cable might need to be turned/wiggled slightly until you feel it slide into the drive at the gearbox end.

I had exactly this on mine and it was surprisingly loud! Someone suggested I take the covering of the speedo and spray some wd40 on the odometer using the little red straw. Clicking instantly went away and it hasn't returned, that was about 8 months ago, it must have just been mucky. Simples :D

Its what I had to do to mine about a week ago, as apart from the ticking the speedo needle would just bounce around all over the place at any constant road speed.

Also if the speedo cable runs dry it starts off ticking, then screeching/screaming and then fails.

mine doesn't have a full dashboard, so I could get away with peeling back one of the dash liners and getting accesses to the back of the dials that way.

Fair enough, lol! I'm planning on spraying WD40 up the back when locating the speedo cable to try make the noise go away, or some other concoction ... If not I'll drop the dash down for better access.

Sorted it guys. The problem was the speedo cable not the speedometer. I put some vasaline on the speedometer, not oil, took cable apart and sprayed WD40 down the shaft. Refitted it and tested. No noise, no wobble on the speedo needle, perfect!
