Hey all

I have swapped my 1978 850cc lump for a A+ 1275.
The new engine is all plumbed in and running but before I take out on the road I need to sort out the speedo.

I have the single centre speedo in at the moment and want to keep it as I like the style but fro. Reading the net it would be upto 20% off.

Is there a way to fix it so I can keep my speedo or is it better to swap it? I really don't want the small 3 clock ones as I don't like them.

Any help much appreciated

Much ta
Matt

Hi Matt, although my car isnt a single speedo, mine is always out after an engine change etc.  All I have done to keep myself legal is to put small Dymo Tape numbers for 20, 30, 40 etc etc on the correct position (I used a smartphone app Speedo to see where the corresponding speeds were on the dial).

There are 'fixes' but they involved sending off the speedo for re-calibration including, I recall, some weird and wonderful calculations with rolling distances etc.  Just found my 'fix' easier!

Just enter your info on the guessworks page and it will tell you which speedo drive gears you need. These are located in the gearbox, so not really an easy fix.

Ah so not really a simple fix then. Don't really like the sound of £100 to get it put right so may have to go with the 'tape method' above for now.

Is there any other large sized speedo's from other models that woukd be more accurate?

Mine was out 5mph so i just remember when i drive it. I backed it up by 3 gps units and my phone. No real issue.

Change the speedo drives in the gearbox, all fixed... I suspect the engine you have is from a metro so the speedo will be way out, or get a 1000tpm speedo to replace the one you have.

I was wondering the same. I have a 1275 A+ in my 74 mini with the center speedo and its about 8-9mph off. I just get used to it.

changing the drives in the box would be the best fix but I have no way near enough knowledge for that, plus I have only just got it in and running so don't really fancy stripping it down again.

the engine is from another mini but originally from a metro.

ill have a lookie around for a 1000 tpm speedo.

cheers

Only 1000tpm speedo fitted to the mini was the VDO unit fitted in the ERA Turbo...

however, most aftermarket speedo's are 1000tpm.

Ah that makes things a little easier then. ill take mine out for a drive soon and see how far out it is and go from there.

cheers for the help.
