Hi all

I am completely new to the world of engine rebuilds or engines at all to be honest and I am having a go at rebuilding my engine after its big ends have gone. (Not sure if that's the right term but that's what my dad said it is!)

I have started stripping it and have a few questions???

We do not think the cylinders are original we bought the engine off a friend and my dad thinks it was in a clubman the guy used to race. I have attached a picture of the cylinder number perhaps someone with more knowledge can tell me what it means?

My head is very heavily Carboned up ! How would I clean this up? Also while taking the bypass hose off I snapped the metal hose bit is this bad news!?

Thanks ms in advance for your help and suggestions!
Jamie

PS I'm trying to upload pictures from my phone but it keeps saying the file is too big!!

Maybe just my way of thinking and looking at this stuff, but if you are rebuilding the bottom end, you really should rebuild the top end (head) too. Apart from then kicking off with something that's 'all done' if there is excessive oil leakage down the valve guides it may not allow the the rings to bed in and can lead to glazing. Also, as part of the reconditioning of the head (and the block too) it should be hat and cold 'tanked' this will remove all the crud from the cooling jacket, so decreasing the possibility of it overheating.

Thanks! I intend on doing what ever it needs and giving it a full rebuild when you say hot and cold tanked what do you mean by this? I really am new to this! Thanks

When you start stripping it down make sure you number the parts so they go back in the same order and same way round ...

Take lots of pics.

Invest in a large can of degreaser and loads of rag/absorbant towels and newspapers ...

Then wire and nylon brushes ...

Hot and cold tanks will clean it inside .. But you need to get most of the external cr@p off!

Best of luck with your first engine build. It's very satisfying when completed and we are all here to help & advise as you go along.

First job is to strip, clean and measure.

Then we can advise on what machining is needed and give you a build sequence. You will be assembling it at least twice as you have to do what is known as a 'trial build (or dummy build as some call it) before taking final measurements, getting final machining done, then final cleaning and final assembly.

Does the gearbox need work? A 'just about serviceable' gearbox can easily fail when the 'as new' torque is put through it after an engine re-build.

Just post every time you need advice and don't worry about anyone thinking a question is stupid. No question is stupid if you don't know the answer :D .
