It would there permanently rather than temporary emergency usage. How would you retrieve the fastener from the gearbox when time comes to fit the correct plug?! Remove the gearbox I'm thinking.....

That plug design is based on what over here we call a "toggle bolt". As Mikal said, once installed it's pretty much there forever since it will be difficult to get the toggle back out of the gearbox.
I'm sure it would work. If I were on the road and miles from home and desperate... then I would use one but it would be under duress. For an emergency plug... I would prefer to use a nylon 3/8 NPT pipe plug forced into the drain hole with some gasket sealant on it. That would be easily reversible.
