I have recently been stripping down my 65 SDL
There are lot of mk2 items fitted; so I am trying to find out how original this car is...

First question, hydro...
It is fitted with front shock absorbers, so I am wondering whether the top arms are hydro units? Is there anything I can check?

Also, where to upper mounting attaches to the body work. The lower fixings are simply holes drilled in the inner wing. Whereas the upper fixings are actually into threaded and inbuilt into the inner wing. Were all shells like this, or does this mean it isn't a "wet" shell?

Any help or advice appreciated,
Thanks, Rich

From the angle you have shown, they look like hydro arms to me

Not sure, my first guess would be dry...

Is the car still on hydrolastic displacers?

Are they any specific photos I could take that would help?

The car was still on hydro displacers when I took it all apart last week, and I had been driving it like that for over 5 years.

Dry top arms are quite square where the 'flat' joins near the knuckle area.

The ones in in the photo show the flat joining with a radium

So PDaykin was right, they are hydro top arms.

With hydro cars it is quite normal to fit front shock absorbers, this helps to steady up the ride. Best used together with the competition bump-stops, this combination give very good ride and handling.

I think that is why there were fitted by a previous owner, and I intend to keep them :)

I was just wondering whether anyone knew about how the upper mount fixes to the inner wing, to help identify my shell???

Pretty sure that the fixings for shocks were always present on the inner wing even with hydro cars. However, the actual bracket for the shock wasn't fitted.

There were four captive nuts on the inner wing ready to bolt the bracket on to

This is what I thought the case would be, but I only have captive nuts at the top. Seems like I will just have to weld some captive nuts at the bottom.

Thanks for all your help.

I put nuts and bolts into the two lower holes which,as you say, didn't have captive nuts.

The captive bracket for the shock absorber bracket at the top but not at the bottom is quite normal for hydrolastic cars.

Thanks for everyones replies.

When tidying up the arms ready for painting this morning I found some more useful part numbers on the castings.

Drivers Side MOWOG  21A 1480

Passenger's side MOWOG 21A 1483

These numbers are only 1 away from the part numbers listed for hydro top arms from a number of mini parts suppliers; and I think that a lot of part numbers were one different between the part number and casting number (not quite sure where I read that!)

I also took some measurements, as found elsewhere on the internet, which also points towards them being hydro top arms

Looks like they are def hydro arms  :D

Thanks for all your help!
