Hi I am having problems with the engine. it takes a lot of time for the engine to start and keeps making a noise if it doesn't fire up it goes to fire up but doesn't catch if that makes sense.

2nd engine will start and tick over if choke is out but as soon as I put choke in the engine konks out and then it will not fire up without the choke being out after a number of times keep turning the key it will fire with choke out only.

3rd there is steam/smoke coming out of my rocker cover if I take the cap of its blowing lots out but not out the exhaust?

4th if I put it in drive it snatches into gear and cuts out straight away?

Any help would be great thankyou Tom

Is it idling high enough in neutral? In my experience (which is not alot) if autos are idling even slightly below what they should be, as soon as u chuck it into gear it will splutter and conk out.

I didn't think an auto engine should start in gear unless the inhibitor has been disconnected??

Also on my auto, if I pull the choke out too far when starting up it will throw a fit too.....it's a delicate balance! :P

needs a good service.......plugs, points, oil, oil filter, air filter, spark plugs....... and you could try this esp since its an Auto

on an old auto engine that has not been started for a long time........what you need to do is pop along to a car parts supplier (oils, de-greasers ect) and get some engine flushing oil 2 x 75mls bottles, pour one into engine jack up front and pop axle stands under sub so wheels are free, start engind and run it for 20mins moving shift in all gears..(this will free up the planet gears that are clogged with **** from non regular services) then switch off and drain old oil (careful very HOT) refull with cheep oil and then put 2nd bottle in and repeat then drain oil again and this time change oil canister filter and refill with 20/50....

That points to the possibility that the positive crankcase ventilation is clogged. So, clear that first.

When you need a lot of choke, that could mean that your engine is inhaling false air. So check the tightness of the nuts of the manifold to the head and the carb to the manifold.

Using flushing oil is dangerous in a Mini Matic, because the clutch plates and brake bands are clad with paper.

Just repeat refreshing the oil, two, three times and use 10W40, because 20W50 is too thick for the clutch plates to press away between them.

Repeating is nessecary because there is remaining about a litre oil in the converter when you refresh the oil. Also, renew the filter every time.

Well through the years it went several places.

But, have a look at the foot of the carb, where it sits on the manifold.

There is coming a rubber tube from a small copper pipe. The tube goes to a pot that sits either on the backende of the engine on a lid that covers the camshaft followers. This pot is an oil separator. Maybe the 'pot' sits on your engine above the clutchhouse lid. Still younger engines have the separator on the distributor chain lid on the front of the engine.

The rubber tube may be clogged and or the copper pipe in the carburettor foot may be. Put the tube in your mouth and blow. And after that, drink a tasty beer to rinse your mouth.
