Help lovely people,
Complete novice trying to learn so excuse the stupidness.
I was trying to set the ignition timing with my fancy new timing gun. I got as far as seeing the timing mark is out so I've loosened the distributer ready to move it when setting the timing and now the engine won't fire.
Can someone explain how I get the distributer back in the correct position to get it to start.
Thanks in advance

a good tip for the future is what I done mark it where it moves against the block

I done it with a screwdriver and a tap with a hammer

or a black marker pen

will leave someone more technical to answer your question properly

Rookie mistake(we all do it!) The best way is to do a full reset,
Before you start mark the dizzy and block with a sharp chisel...

Now
put #1 cylinder to TDC on firing stroke,

now note where the rotor arm is pointing,(should be around one o'clock position),
now fit dizzy cap and connect plug #1 lead to this position(or as close as possible!)

the firing order is 1342 ANTI clockwise.

31. 4321
42

The engine should attempt to fire, you now need to finalise timing by rotating dizzy body

10° (@ 1000 rpm vacuum disconneted and blocked) is what my 2 minis are set to

Hope this helps!

I think I've flooded it now or I'm doing something wrong. It did sound like firing for a minute but wasn't quite getting there. I'll go back out to it tomorrow and have another go.

It's alive!! Thanks people!!

Okay. Now to get it to run with no flat spots etc

The way I do it is to give it a test drive, and if you need to adjust the dizzy you lossen the clamp nut(s) by 1/2 turn, then rotate dizzy slightly, tighten clamp and test again!

How does it run?
