After countless swearing and grazed hands it looks like the reason my speedo is not working is the drive from the gearbox and not the cable or clock. Can you remove the output shaft with the oil in the sump.

If not could I jack up the passenger side and let the oil sit the other end of the block.

thanks in advance

Stephen

This kind of fault is more likely to be the drive gear the cable connects to rather than the pinion in the gearbox.

The pinion is metal, the drive gear is plastic.

You can get to it from underneath, a ramp or lift would make it easy but you can do it on the drive - if you can get the cable off the drive gear there is a small 1/4" or 3/8" bolt which holds the C-shaped retaining plate, once both bold and C-retainer are removed you can pull the drive gear out.

It's a pain in the proverbial but it can be done.

Phil.

PS While I think about it, the cable needs to fit snuggly into the drive gear on the gearbox.  The aftermarket cables can be a touch undersized in the square section which plugs into the drive gear - which would cause the drive to spin and the speedo not to work.  If the square section is too small you can either try to reduce the size of the square socket in the drive gear the cable connects into, or use a small wedge or shim to make up the difference in size.

Good luck !!

I found the opposite recently, the square end of the cable was too big to fit in the drive, had to remove the drive, as explained above (nightmare job), and open up the square in the drive slightly

Sorry thats what I was aludding to when I meant gear box. The big question do I have to drain the oil. Cable is off and ive undone the bolt so just need to extract but don't want oil all over the garage.

Problem fixed, the square slot for the cable to fit in had split so cable just did not pick up the gear box out put. And no oil spilt.

thanks for your help
