Question is weld the spreader plates that came with the cage to the shell or make my own that are bigger and use the plates that came with it as external washers ?

dont need to double plate and would high recommend not to you, only need to plate inside to stop the feet pushing through in a accident so dont use two plates only one.when i fitted mine i made my own which were alot bigger cant remember the size but have a look in the blue book of regs as it will be in there.but the safety ones are more than adequate. dont forget to weld through primer before welding and practice on a peice for committing to the real thing as it only one shot deal if im honest and it got to be a decent weld a full seam all the way round, none of this gasless crap.if your not a experienced welder get someone who is

Blue books 150mm squared I think. By 3mm? (I think).
I have the blue book as pdf going to read it. I am 100% sure on the 3mm that's why I bought two big sheets of it.

11x11cm? Just over 4" a side.
that makes sense. but 120cm doesn't even if it was the total size of each square thats 30cm a side lol

120 square centimetres, not 120 centimetres squared (not that your 30cm calc is either of these!)
12cm x 10cm = 120cm2

Thats ok then regarding welding part
Plates aren'tthat big when you consider half of the plates are bent in half but yep look massive when marking and cutting out

I was thinking the same as you about putting some spreader plates ok the outside to use as washers but now I'm not so sure
