How old is the car?
Old ones had a pressure siwthc, later cars had a switch on the pedal. Later ones are quite easy to knock the connections off.

But a faulty switch would mean that both lights would not work.

You do realise the brake light bulb is a twin fillament bulb so the side lights is a different circuit to the brakes... so your sidelights may still work but the fillament for the brakes could be blown...

Easy way to check, one look at the bulb, and two, swap the ns and os bulbs, if the problem mves then the problems with the bulb, if it stays where it is, then the problems with the wiring.
