Doing a bit of day dreaming at this point, but started to wonder with all these cheaper saloon minis around, as well as brand new shells for saloons, what about the pick ups?

If I can't find a reasonably priced decent condition pickup, I can definitely get my hands on a cheap saloon, so would it be possible to chop up the saloon shell and convert it into a pickup. I wen through M-Machines' catalogue and think I have most of the required bits.

Assuming I were to get a late injection saloon, cut off the floor and sills at the bulkhead, kept the doors, and front half of the roof, below is the full list of parts I think I'd need to build out everything rearwards. I figured if I can get a good shape Jap injection mini I could have all the newer car creature comforts with a full pickup body. Am I nuts? Has anyone tried this?

Seems like less work (cheaper?) and a nicer result in some cases than essentially building a new pick up shell out of a rusted hulk that needs everything replaced anyway

The vehicle would be classed as radically modified and would need to be inspected by VOSA and will end up on a Q plate in all likelihood

It's never going to say pickup on the log book.

Edit.

Just seen your location. You'd have to check local laws on modified vehicles.

i'm not worried about the legal implications of this at all at this stage, just the potential based on all the reproduced parts made today. You can always figure out paperwork if the concept can be executed

at a quick glance there are things missing...rear lights, rear glass and rubber, bumpers, no plate back and lights.
Anyhoo, anything is possible with time and enough welding wire!

True, I was focused on the big sheet metal parts at this stage. There are always a ton of small items to cover too.
Has anyone attempted something like this?
I won't in the short term but do have 3 jap spec late SPIs around....
