I have a 1966 Austin Mini I am currently completely rebuilding. It is fitted with hydroelastic suspension, I have heard that new displaces are hard to get hold of and aren't always reliable. I was wondering if anyone could advice me on whether they would convert it to dry or stick with wet? I am for keeping the car as original as possible, but would be willing to change suspension if it is the best option. Cheers.

Tim at 'Minimail' can repair Hydrolastic displacers or supply exchange reconditioned units:-

minimail.co.uk

Most other parts like metal pipes, bump stops, etc are available from Minispares.

Also check out this recent thread:-

Keep the Hydrolastic it is a unique part of Mini history, becoming rare and should be preserved for as long as possible before they are all gone.........ride is great as well, far superior to dry, they only stopped it because it was more expensive. Most of the winning BMC Works rally and race Mini's were on hydrolastic too.

My vote is definitely keep it hydro and as original as possible.

When I bought my 1965 Morris I had reservations over the 850 engine, drum brakes and hydro suspension, being more accustomed to more power, discs and adjustable dry suspension.

But an original 850 is an adorable thing of beauty, so much character and fun to drive on those skinny tyres and softer suspension.

When restored my 67 I wish that I had kept the hydro. At the time I couldn't find good, matched sets of displacers.

In my opinion, hydro cars are much better than they are given credit for.
