Hi all,

I'm starting to get a puff of blue smoke every time I start the car in the morning and it almost smells like a burnt out electric motor... A quick googling suggests worn valve guides, but its a brand new head?? I only put it on in August (part of my Cooper S kit)

Does it have the little seals on the valve stems?

On an injection it should have seals on all valves ( including the exhaust )

However, blue smoke on startup on a new head... I'd be getting in contact with the head supplier

If it goes away after start up my money would be on stem seals.

Have you got the correct oil level?

You'll probably find it won't always do it. Mine puffs on startup most times, but sometimes doesn't do it even maybe for 2 or 3 starts. I think it depends on the position of everything when the engine switches off, eg if you have some oil getting past on a given valve, then if the engine stops with this valve shut, it can't dribble down into the cylinder.
