Hi

I have deciced to fit a remote style shifter gearbox when i repower my mk1 with a 1275.

Can anyone tell me the dimensions and placement on the tunnel of the required hole (maybe using the cross member as a reference)

Or can i fit the remote casing to the old paddle stirrer gear box temporarily to get the position right or are they completely different beasts?

Just at the moment, I can't help with the measurement where to cut the hole, however, get a hold of one of these (which you'll need regardless);-

and trace around the inside of that to get the right size and shape for the hole.

Great Moke, ordered one and its on its way. curve and profile will match the tunnel so give me the offset (hopefully) and i will find a mini that uses a remote shifter and measure from cross member

Don't forget to get the rear bush and bracket for the housing.

Fitting the gearbox with the transver case and clutch housing will allow you to mark off the area you need to cut away.

No need for the rest of the engine and the remote will clean stuff and make it easyish. Then drill for the rear support. Fit stick. Put gait over mark. Move stick about check position. Remark gaiter as needed. Cut out and tidy hole as needed.

See your other thread for more infos. I went other way with the remote.

where the remote and gearstick need to pass through.

ok to be honest there has been no mention as to what floor pan you have for which gear change.

through the two topics on this I have been under the impression that it was for the remote housing and also that it was for the magic wand type.

in your first topic on that it read as remote housing, in this one it reads a magic wand.

Yes sorry it has a standard 850 motor with a magic wand shifter and I'm going to change it to 1275 with a gearbox that has the remote shifter. i understand that i will need the correct hole lined up for the gear lever through the tunnel plus support bracket. any other problems/adjustment that you can think of?

It is very straightforward. The rectangular hole for the remote shifter is slightly flanged around the edge to give it more stiffness, but that's also easy.

The only other modification is drilling the 3 holes for the rear mounting bracket and there are two holes just in front of the transverse cross-member and one behind. I believe the bolts are 5/16" UNF.

This is definitely the best way forward with a Mk.1 as it maintains it with period parts. I guess it will be a non-'S' engine, but these days that is accepted for a Mk.1 up-grade, especially if it was a pre-A+ as that modification was often carried out on Mk.1 cars from the time the 1275 non-'S' block was introduced in about 1968 - '69.

If you are stuck on the hole position I could remove the gaiter from mine and take some measurements, but this may take me a few days to do. Let me know if this will help.
