Hi All,

At some point before I owned my mini some dodgy bodyshop did a real good job of respraying the wings and one of the doors on my car.

For some reason, the red of the two wings, scuttle and around the windscreen is a different colour to the rest of the car ! Not only that but they clearly didnt prep the original paint as the red they sprayed on is coming off in big translucent flakes ! You can see the original (89 Flame Red) underneath it which looks in good nick.

They also did a lovely job on the door, missing loads of it at the bottom and around the window but somehow managing to get overspray on the glass !

Anyways, what is the best thing to do with the wings ? Should I rub them down to get rid of the stupid topcoat and get a can of the original colour to spray over them properly ?

If it's flaking off that badly then I would try and do it again. But this time do it better than what they did. You've got to get it rough all over otherwise the paint as you says, flakes off. I found with my old flame red mini, that whenever you have panels painted seperatly, ie, not a full respray, you can tell the difference. My drivers door had been reskinned before I had the car, and it was a totally different colour, but on the paint tin, it was the right one. Also I could see where it had had a new front wing as that was a different colour. Overall, my lil red mini was in the end......9 different variations of Flame Red. and it was the right year red. But remember as well, the sun also makes red fade dramatically.

But I think if definatly do something about it, and if the paint looks fine underneath, take the rubbish top coat off, then G3 the original paint to a mirror shine ;D

Thanks Smeg,

What should I use to get the old paint off ? Wet and dry paper.... ?

I was thinking of getting a proper place to match the new paint to the rest of the car rather than just buying the flame red (the one in halfrauds doesnt look anything like the colour of my car!). I could do with a little pot to touch up some other bits. I think halfrauds can do this as they seem to have all the gear for mixing up paint there.

Red is one of those b*stard colours that will always look a different shade. Plus theres things like fade to consider too.

If its flaking off quite bad, then I'd repaint it.

The chances of getting the last coat off and leaving the older coat still intact is slim.

Up to you matey, leave it be or re-paint it.

Theres plenty of prep and painting guides on here if you search :D
