Yes, top mark to bottom mark always used to be 1 pint. You can run it slightly over the top mark. In the 60's before centre oil pick-up pipes were normal fit, we used to run around 1/4" over maximum when possible on rally cars to prevent oil surge denying us oil pressure during hard cornering to the right. As soon as the 22 psi warning light just flicked on in a corner we would stick a pint in as soon as we got the chance.

ok so I have used 2 fifths of a pint in 800 miles

That is a super result. The original 1275 engines were reckoned to be good if they did 200 miles per pint. Different valve stem oil seals did improve things a lot, but they still use a lot in modern terms.
