I am just about to start rebuilding my mpi box and am after some advice on a couple of gears I have. They both have a slight shallow worn into the gear teeth, can anyone advise on wether these need replacing.

Thanks Nick

Doesn't look too pretty. I'd say these need replacing. Won't be hard to find some good second hand replacements.

I doubt you'd notice it, but being 3rd gear, as Stiggytoo has said, finding a new or better one won't be too hard.

Was the nose spigot / bearing between 1st and 3rd motion shaft really worn bad?  If not, you may need to check the tunnels in the case between the Main Shaft and Layshaft are in fact parallel. Not too common, but I have found the odd one that's out. They really need to be within 0.002" at the very outside.

It is machined in during the manufacturing process as part of the design to allow easy recognition... single groove and double groove types are NOT interchangeable

I don't think it's the IDing he's referring to, but the wear in the teeth.

Ah yes I can see it now, a slightly different "flat area" on the tooth flank, that looks like a gear of a different helix has been mated together have you got the corresponding mating gear, you should see similar wear on the opposite flank same side.
