Everyone probably knows about the John Cooper MPi head etc kit from Mini sport/ John Cooper.

AFAICS it is an improvement over stock, but would doubt 90bhp. I'd still appreciate any increase!

I rang Jonsped, about their engines which are on par price wise and offer up to 130bhp, but the guy said I am limited by the ecu of the MPI.

Can anyone offer any suggestions? I am happy to bypass the ecu or ditch it but I guess that affects emissions requirements??

What are the options?

ps I am selling my track car to pay for this so currently have a healthy budget.

pps The John cooper option, while being the same as the Mini Sport version, has the advantage of added value insofar as the car would instantly be a Cooper S which in itself would probably pay for itself on resale??

Cheers Guys

Ed

7/8 port cylinder head with EFI? It would give you more potential. :shades:

The ECU can take about 100bhp before having to change it, VmaxScart (who do supercharger kits) use Emerald K6 ECU's. If you want to ditch it you'd have to change to a carb and if you want to change it for more power you'd be changing it for a £600 twin carb kit, all money you could spend on an ECU and getting it professionally mapped at a garage.

If you want ultimate power you can get a supercharger or turbo kit for about £2-3k and that will take you up to 130+ bhp on the MPI engines, theses come withe everything you need you'll just need to get it dyno tuned. You could also change the engine for a yahama R1 engine or a small block VTec? Turbominis is a good site to go if you want to know more about turbo/super charging but it gets cramped and hot!

If you want around 100bhp I would suggest tuning it, so getting new exhaust and manifold & new top of the range performance head, rockers & hi lift cams, induction kit (wont hurt) etc, its the kits from minispares and places.

But then either way you're putting almost twice the power through your car so you'd need to start thinking about things like your tyres, shocks, brakes especially.

Once you get over the initial cost of the engine improvements the costs increase with things like 4 pot callipers, vented brakes, roll cages, uprated shocks etc. Its oryt going fast but you need to stop and steer.

Don't forget the gearbox. That'll need a refurb as a minimum requirement but you'll definitely need an updated diff. But seeing as you have a track car you probably already know this :)

The track car is powered by an R1 5VY which has the gearbox as a single unit. I wouldn't plan on going that far with the mini!

I would like to strike a balance between having an original car and not having to upgrade brakes, gearbox and diff etc.

Currently the car only has 9K miles so I would hope it is in good nick internally. It would be a shame to blow it up!

The JCW package sounds nice, but a supercharger I guess would be better throughout the rev range. I am not that fond of turbos!

Am I right in thinking 100bhp is a good ceiling if everything else stays the same?

So would the JCW package with a new programable ECU work?

The JCW package includes a performance head, roller rockers, higher injection pressure and a better exhaust and manifold.

I don't know what a 7/8 port head is!! Sorry!

I don't need silly power or speed, just a feeling of having improved things somewhat!

The green car at the end is my track car:

Or, the 100bhp supercharger kit for the MPi

or the 150bhp kit...

Does anyone on the forum have them?

Specialist Components do fuel injection kits for MPI engines

http://twinkam.co.uk.../Products/SC220

The standard heads are 5 port - 2 inlet ports and 3 exhaust ports - and have all ports on the same side of the engine (towards the back in the engine bay)

Upgraded 7 port heads are 4 inlet and 3 exhaust ports - and have the inlet ports on the front of the engine

8 port heads have 4 inlet and 4 exhaust ports.

Cheers,

Does the extra porting alone lead to a power increase, or just allow other measures to work?

If you have a look at the injection section in the tech section of the forum there are plenty of threads about increasing mpi performance. But the ECU is the limiting factor

My last mpi had a fletcher full system with decat coupled to a maniflow lcb , bigger 52mm throttle body and a updated air filter and made 79bhp and went a lot better than stock but that's probable as far as the ecu would let you go next step is then it up rate the ecu and have it properly mapped good quality head and rockers and I've also used the swiftune sw5 mpi cam to good affect in the past as well , I do like the look of the specialist components mpi injection kit as well so might be worth looking into , do forget to have everything else in good working order as well as every little helps ie new fuel filter properly adjusted tappers good plugs etc will all help
