When I bought the car the guy told me it has a 1380 engine fitted. Now I know nothing about this engine. I no longer have any form of contact with the seller. If i was to take the head off etc and take some decent pictures of it would people on here be able to recognise any possible work? Also from the head down is it hard to say what work has been done?
i am planning on taking it to the rollers sometime soon so maybe he could help. But I could do without paying someone just to strip my engine down.
I have a 1380 and no idea of what work it has had done to it???

take the head off and measure the bore your self, 1380 is 73.5mm.
Head work normaly involves enlarging the ports. if the manifold gasket almost matches the ports then it may well have been ported
as for what has been done to the bottom end, you would have to remove it from the gearbox.
Then there is the condition of the engine, that will require stipping it down and inspecting each component.
All depends how far you want to go, if its burning oil, low on oil pressure or making noises. Top end inspection will usualy tell you what you have and bore condition. While the head is off its a good idea to replace the valve stem seals.

As far as condition goes it sounds beautiful no knocks or rattles. So hopefully no hidden wear. I havent covered 2000 miles witht he engine in 4 years and the chap said the engine was pretty fresh when I bought it.
Sorry to come accrosss a little thick, but am I looking for a slightly enlarged port on the engine compared to that of the manifold?
Any other things to look out for might have a play tomorrow?

The 'manifold' gasket the bit between the cylinder head and the exhaust/ inlet manifold with three squareish big holes, two round big holes and six small round holes.
Standard head ports do not normaly match the gasket. If all the ports in the cylinder head look smooth and match the gasket, then chances are its at least had some work done on it. if there is a ridge 5mm in on the round inlet ports that then squares off the further into the head, then chances are it standard.
You do realise that if you start dismantling things you will need new gaskets when reassembling?????

Not to mention the correct tools before you start dismantling too!!!
As the saying goes......."if it ain't broke, don't fix it"!!!
Does it really matter what it is if it is working fine? Wait until work does need doing then investigate? Just enjoy the trouble-free motoring while you can!!

A shot on a rolling road should be able to tell you what state it's in, if it was me and everything was fine, I wouldn't start dismantling it just to find out what I had.
