Estate Rear Door Adjustments

Hi All,

 

First post on here but have been a mini owner for nearly 5 years, and have used the forum a lot have always found the answers required.

 

Just before Christmas I purchased a Clubman Estate in need of renovation, working over the festive season I got her through a MOT on new years eve, and have been uncovering more and more 'urgent work' since then. I will start a project section for the car shortly.

 

This afternoon I have fitted new rear door rubbers as the old ones were totally perished and allowing pools of water to gather in the rear load area, however since fitting the new rubbers the doors are very difficult to close, requiring pressure to be applied to top and bottom for them to latch. Is there any form of adjustment available, similar to front doors using shims? The haynes manual is a bit vague when it comes to the rear doors.

 

Appreciate any input from van or estate owners?

Hi Olie & congrats on your Mini.

We're restorong a barn find mk2 van, same issue. The rubbers are very puffy, the solution looks like either to wait with the doors shut, for them to compress a bit (current plan) or trim the rubbers from the back a bit. Not sure if the pins that go up/down into the roof/floor can be spaced away from the door a little by use of shims under the loops (not close to the car just now, so can't check)? Might be worth a try if it's really troublesome.

As above,

You could gently push the doors top and bottom and leave them shut for a week or so to compress the rubber a little. In this way you'll always have good contact between the seals and doors and hopefully no leaks!
I had this on my mini boot lid and used this method and after a week it was easier to close and it didn't leak!

Had a similar problem with the seal on the boot lid, I found that by fitting new gaskets between the body and the boot hinges it brought it out enough to accommodate the new seal. It might work with the rear door hinges by putting new gaskets under the hinges as they are thicker and not compressed over time.

Thanks for the responses guys.

 

It looks like the general consensus is to leave the doors closed for a while to compress the new rubbers. I will leave the doors closed this week, and check them next weekend.

 

Failing that I like the idea of new gaskets on the hinges.
