Yes, I'm going there... I was dreaming about long term goals with the MPi, and the idea of going to an alloy 5 port head is one that crossed my mind.

So, has it ever been done? And yes, I know I could get the MPi head ported and machined like the alloy head, and yes, the thought of going to a side-mounted rad also crossed my brain, but come on... In the years since the MPi first came out, SOMEONE must have found a way to use an alloy head, with the front mounted rad, and come up with a suitable bracket for the alternator.

Many thanks!

what advantages does an alloy head have? If you want mega power why not stick one of the Bini supercharges on?

why bother with a 5 port alloy head?

if you are going to make some thing do it different which is why the alloy heads are 7 ports, 8 ports  and the 16 valve 8 ports.

Someone did make one for the MPi at one time as I know someone who has one. I can find no reference to it now.

But this is a valid question: why bother with a 5 port alloy head?

I guess it depends on what your intentions are?

I thought maybe it was Minisport that had an MPi version, but I do not seem to find any reference to it any where at this time.

I just like the alloy 5-port head; Lighter weight, better cooling, better breathing, and better price than a 7-port. Yes, a 7-port is a lovely beast, but it brings with it more problems, like needing to change to the side-mount rad, changing the water pump to mount the alternator down low, and devising a way of quickly removing the 4 spot lamps to get at the grill, because now with all that carburetor/TBI on the front of the motor, there's no way at getting to the oil filter for an oil change.

The intent would be if and when the motor has to come out, to do a mild upgrade of the existing motor: .020 overbore, lightening and balancing, fast road cam that gives a little more balls on the top end, SC fuel injection, and an alloy head to top it all off.

Just a suggestion with that list would be to make sure all the components work well together, the engine is a sum of its parts.

Certainly the alloy head is lighter, but other attributes depend on how it is finished off.

Calver ST has some nice MPi heads as do others. The SC injection is a compromise as you give up somethings from the Rover MEMS and you gain some things.

Well, as I already have no MPI injection (thanks previous owner), the SC kit would certainly be an improvement in that regard.

With enough time and patience anything can be done. Pierce Manifolds make many of the aluminum heads found in the market. I just noticed you are in the US as are they:

They don't offer an MPi head, but with a little creativity, things can be made to work.

If only there were a thermostat sandwich plate that was also an alternator top bracket, then anything could be possible.
