Dear All,

A local dealership is closing down, and as I know them, they've given me an old drip-feed showroom 6v/12v batery charger..

On another thread, I've see 'intelligent' chargers and was going to buy one as my min. is not a daily....

So, what harm can an untried/untested battery drip-feed showroom charger do to my battery.?

Straight to the tip or worth a try.?

Cheers as always

An old drip feed never turns off and will eventually cook your battery.. The intelligent ones keep checking ..loading , discharging and possibly de-sulphating and can be kept permanently attached without worry

It could be worth keeping it as most chargers that monitor the battery are of a very low output like 500ma and the charger you have been given may be 3/5/10amps ? which would be good to bring up a battery that needs a 4/6hr top up.

It depnds on what it actually is.  If it's a regulated charger leading to a 13.8v constant voltage at full charge you could happily leave it hooked up all the time without worry.  Does Google throw up any information?

I personally use a CTEK MXS 5.0 which is just plug it in and forget and I would highly recommend.

If your battery has sulphated badly it's to the recycling centre I'm afraid, no amount of "fancy charges" will recover it properly.  Lead acid batteries do not like to be discharged flat unless specifically designed for it i.e. a deep discharge battery.
