Rocker Cover Gasket

Best Answer dklawson , 05 March 2016 - 04:55 PM

Do apply sealant between the gasket and valve cover, it does help address problems with warped covers.  Do NOT apply it between the seal and cylinder head.

Please see the thread linked below where I provide a more detailed explanation and give a step by step explanation of how to bond the gasket to the rocker cover.  Feel free to ask questions.

Hi,

I'm going to replace my rocker cover with a nice shiny one. I've seen people on here say they seal the gasket.

Is it necessary? I've got some RTV, so should I stick the gasket to the rocker cover and then apply it to the head, or just put it on wet (as it were)?

Thanks,

Rod

No not necessary, but if the gasket is mis shaped due to poor storage, some prefer to goop it to the cover, let it cure a bit and then place.
You can achieve the same with dabs of grease if you prefer.

Don't seal it, no need too.

If you're going to take the rocker cover off frequently then I'd suggest going for a silicone gasket to save having to replace the cork item frequently.

Why do people put sealant on it then if it's not necessary?

I glue the gasket to the valve cover as you do have them off from time to time to adjust the valves, then I use grease on the cylinder head side of the gasket - a light coating means it will come off easily the next time without damaging the cork gasket. And I've never had one leak using this method.

Yup.  18 months on mine and no leaks.  I did goo it to the lid to start with, not the head though.
