Best Answer hungdynasty , 03 April 2016 - 01:28 PM

I just took a picture of my ECU model, for your reference, 1998 Japan SPI with air conditioning.IMG-20160403-WA0007_zpsuvpmdhuj.jpg

Looking at getting a reader.. Which pod / lead would I have to get for my 98 jdm mini? Also, would I be right in thinking that the obd port inside the car doesn't do anything? But has power running to it?

Also, in this day and age, I would have thought someone would have developed some sort of software interface that connects via USB that could replace the need for the sp readers..

Thanks :)

Guessing this

If yours is a jap spec car it will be spi set up with a/c, so guessing it has the 3 pin plug under he bonnet.

since both spi and mpi cars where only made for about 4 years each and rover made there own system, and the knowledge died with rover.

Don't think there be a pc version, I could be wrong.

I use a sp4 on the mpi.

Thank - does this mean that for ecu matters - treat it as a normal spi? (sorry to be a bit slow on this - just want to be certain before I start buying things!) I also found a thing called Psacn - think you have looked at before.. would this work for mine?

did the jap ECU get updated - which ecu do I even have?   (mems 1.6?)

Many thanks  -  I'll try and stop being annoying.. soon :)

Found a really good bit of documentation on the mems units that helped clear a lot of things up I think!

Sure you have seen it before, but if you search this..

Pretty sure your late model JDM will gave a unique MEMS unit as your car has an SPi throttle body and the MPI style coil pack.

It should be a MEMS2J from memory which is why it has the OBD style plug can you read the part number on the MEMS to confirm?

interestingly, I found the 3 pin connector under the bonnet and I also have an OBD port which has power going to it - not sure if anything else does.. weird

My car is 98 japan version, it use the 3 pin connector for diagnosis . The OBD type connector is probably just for airbag diagnosis, I checked it only has 3 wires connected, one for live power, one earth and one to airbag device.

Nice one. If you have the AMP 3 pin connector then you should be able to use a reader for the earlier MEMS.
Any chance of that part number of the ECU, it's good to document this for others?
