I am starting a new woody project and wondered if someone could help me with engine and vin numbers and how they should match up. I have these...

VIN. AAW7-263085

Eng. 8AMUH-353828

Does that seem like the right engine number for a 1962 traveller? Form what I am finding in searches I am not sure if it should start with 8A an not 8AM as sites say after 1962 the 8AM prefix was introduced and also only the first 25000 were 8A. Which confuses me because there must have been more than 25000 made in the first year (1959) alone right? Also does that engine number look like it is way to high for a 1962? i.e. has the engine been replaced?

Any help much appreciated!

BMC had made 500,000 Mini's by December 1962. Your chassis number/engine number combo looks about right to me for a June 1962 vehicle, it matters not that it is a Traveller as saloons share the same spec. engine.

I don't know which website(s) you have been looking at but most of those listing Mini engine numbers are rather less than 100% accurate.

The only way to be sure that your engine is the original is to contact BMIHT who have the original production records. I believe that they offer an on-line enquiry service these days.
