Finally got around to lifting my engine out this morning.

All was going well, I had knocked the driveshafts about halfway out of the gearbox, and couldn't get them out any further. I had read that if you lift the engine slightly with them still in, you gain a bit of space to fully knock them out.

As I lifted the engine slightly, it spun round. In the process it separated both pot joints and opened up the gaiter.

So the ends of both pot joints are now off the driveshafts. What do I need to do to repair them?

Is the gaiter split or just come off? Has anything dropped out?

Personally I'd have knocked the lower arm off and swung it out to release the drive shafts, saves messing about and you don't run the risk of chewing the splines on the inner pots.

First things first. Don't rotate anything, lower the engine down and re-engage the pot joints so the spheres are in their original locations. You can then worry about replacing the gaiters later

It just come off. Nothing has dropped out.

I tried to follow Haynes, it just said in there about releasing the top ball joint.

Will I need to replace the boot? It doesn't look damaged.

That's what I do when removing engines, put a bag over the end of the joint, cable tie or tape the bag to the shaft.

I usually just undo the caliper bolts and remove the complete hubs with shaft included ;)

That's a relief. Its the first time I have removed an engine, and everything had gone perfectly up until then so I was annoyed with myself!

To be fair this is how I do it anyway.  Keeping the inner 'pot' in the diff housing obviously saves oil spilling out everywhere if you have forgotten to drain it  >_<

If in doubt, just change the joints for new as they are not that expensive in the grand scheme of car part prices.

I had a joint separate like that on a rally after a tie bar failed.......Once i'd rescued the situation and got the tie bar back in place, I simply slid the cv back in, pushed the boot back over and away I went.

Bunch of cowboys ;-)  ...  this job is so simple, you don't need to strip your bottom arms or ball joints or cut the gaitor of break your pot joints.....

with he car in a totally rollable condition on it's wheels etc...

1) slightly lift the engine off the subframe and push it to the LHS (LHS & RHS are always as viewed from the drivers seat)  now wriggle the inner CV from out of the gearbox and drop it down under the diff.

2) push the engine towards the RHS (away from the radiator side or water pump if you have a front mounted rad) and wriggle the shorter driveshaft by grasping the inner CV and sliging it out of the gearbox, now drop it down under the diff.

3) lift engine/transmission out whilst watching for any catches, at about half way out remove the speedo cable.

4) lift all the way out

5) push car back and lower engine safely on to anyones toe that suggest stripping CV joints or removing hubs etc.... ;-)
