"Motorsport at the Palace will pay tribute to another famous use of Crystal Palace as in 1969, the venue was used to film scenes in the iconic motoring movie The Italian Job. The circuit’s inner field was used to film the van being blown up so the film’s star Michael Caine could say that immortal line; “You’re only suppose to blow the bloody doors off.” The actual circuit was used by stunt drivers to practice the jumping sequence with the Mini Cooper cars as well as being used for part of the car chase itself"

MOTORSPORT AT THE PALACE REVS UP

"With just over two weeks to go, Motorsport at the Palace is revving up to be the best yet with around 200 cars battling it out on Sunday 29th and Monday 30th May at Crystal Palace, one of the UK’s oldest race venues."
With Classes ranging from pre-war to modern, there’s plenty to keep petrolheads happy. You can see the full line-up of ‘runners and riders’ here.

http://www.motorspor...tors/4590932447

Between the practice sessions in the morning and the racing in the afternoon, we have a very special treat for you. The Italian Job Minis will be taking a lap of the circuit as well as being on display for pictures, after filming scenes from the iconic movie at Crystal Palace some 47 years ago.

"There is also a stunning array of motorcycles taking to the tarmac as the Classic Motorcycle Racing Club brings some of the existing lap record holders back to the Palace, some who were involved in the final races back in 1972.
Over 40 clubs will display their cars alongside the trader village and family fun fair. There will also be live music from Elle & the Pocket Belles and daredevil stunt action from the Savage Skills bike display team.
Private owners can also book pole position parking in the classics area, meeting like-minded owners to showcase a multitude of marques."

Last picture brings back a lot of memories raced 1/8ic cars there in the eighties when
had lost interest in Minis and other forms of full size Motor Sport.

I belonged to the London Radio Car Club back in the 80's as well. Those cars used to cost a small fortune, 30,000 to 40,000rpm from a 3.5cc 2 stroke glow plug engine and of course you carried at least one spare. Tyres wore out within 30 minutes and you'd have to carry several different compounds as the track conditions changed. IIRC 0 to 60mph in under 2 seconds....

I actually only visited once when racing 1/8 ic cars! was a founder member of Stonehaven and District Radio Car Club but raced

nationally in BRCA 1/8 series was never that quick when racing but did referee at many meetings and at euro salon car champs

new quite a few London guys that did national events good old days ,and as you say bl**dy expensive !
