Hey gang.

Thought I had a simple job of changing the bulb on my reverse lamp, i took off the surround etc and there is no simple way to swap bulb! It's totally flat on the back apart from two connectors for the pos and neg wiring...

What have I got to do? I took ages finding this specific reverse lamp and the bulb lasted 3 minutes. Haha.

Thinking I've got to wire a h1 holder or something after cutting in a hole?

What's people's advice and experience got to say?

Thanks in advance!

Only pic I have atm showing type of lamp:

If its sealed beam then you will need a complete unit. As to modding it for a different holder i cannot say

It is a Lucas lamp and the bulb is most likely a pre-halogen BPF type. That is British Pre Focus. Put a photo of the bulb and that can be confirmed. You can buy BPF bulbs on-line. For a reversing light max wattage is supposed to be 21 watts, but don't worry about that as it will not be likely to ever be checked.

I have tried to cut a hole in the sealed beam unit to take a halogen bulb, did not go well.

You can find non original sealed beam units on ebay.

The lamp itself is that size and shape but the glass is original Lucas with the rectangle around the name.

Looked at bps type bulbs on Google, the back of this lamp definitely doesn't have a bulb that looks like one, totally sealed in. It probably is that type but non-interchangeable :/

What were the issues you had with modification? Surely just a hole filed wider and wider until it fit snug enough would be fine? Plus lots of duct tape. Haha

It is (was) a sealed beam unit where the whole thing is just a bulb.
You need a new rev light. Try to get one with a separate bulb. There are loads on eBay.

You need to either buy a complete new light or a new sealed beam unit which includes the front lens is. I.e. the glass.

There is not much I can add to this thread.  However, if you ever see a lamp where the terminals go straight into the back of the bulb (through the glass), that's a sealed beam and they are not serviceable.  It doesn't matter if you broke the glass trying to get the bulb out... the bulb was dead and could not be repaired anyway.  However, I hope you didn't get cut trying to remove the bulb.

Repair is by replacement.  As suggested above, you either need the exact type (not necessarily Lucas) that you removed or you need one with that case size and a replaceable bulb.  Depending on the size, you may find that a sealed low beam from a 4 headlight equipped car will fit.
