Can you confirm that the cables should be free to move in those quadrants?

Just checked the Haynes manual and it says the timing should be 7 degrees BTDC with the vacuum pipe disconnected at 1000rpm. Should I modify this to allow for unleaded fuel?

disconnected but also plugged at the carb end ..

I'm sure somebody told me a couple of years back that it should be 10 degrees to allow for the fact that it's running on unleaded fuel?

I tend to do it by ear and revs. Test drive for no pinking, and pulling in all gears

Does the timing affect the emissions? i.e. will retarding the timing more than 7 degrees make the emissions better or worse or have absolutely no effect? Given that the CO is over double the maximum I need to get it down drastically!!

too much advance will increase emissions dramatically, CO is usually mixture

Maybe glazed a bit on the linings and rough up the drums, and re-adjust after checking the wheel cylinders are free.

As in rough up both with ??? grit wet and dry?

this really isn't a terrible fail... you will get it sorted easy!

No I know, I was being over dramatic like my Daughter! It's the end of the world to her ;-) She has visions of missing the L2B where it's entered into the show and shine. The problem with the brakes is you don't know how good/bad they are without a way of testing them.

You do if you have an IPHONE as they have acelerometers in them and a simple app will give you braking efficiences...

Now that's a good idea! I'm afraid at my age things like iPhones have passed me by (my phone was £17.99) but I'm sure one of my kids can get that for me.

Thanks :-)

New calipers...on drum brakes?
Personally at this point I would do a disc conversion anyway

It had new calipers on all 4 corners when we restored it 2 years ago, along with new shoes and a new master cylinder. A disc conversion is on the 'to do' list but as it's not my car I'm waiting for my Daughter to finish Uni (this summer) so that she can pay for it hahaha

Does it need a servo or do people just fit the discs without? There doesn't seem to be a lot of room in the engine bay to retro fit a servo and the last time I looked they didn't seem to be available to buy new.

There is space for a remote servo and kits are abailable but I wouldn't bother. I don't like the feel of the brakes with a servo fitted, but others will disagree so it does come down to personal choice. I would try before you buy if you can, I am sure someone local would have a servo setup you could compare with.

Presumably it still uses the original master cylinder if you don't bother with the servo?

Yep I disagree.... I like the feel of a servo, it is a lot lighter but you can still get the response and you very quickly get used to them..... well some people do anyway ;-)

OCT 88 onwards they where all fitted with master cylinder combined servo units

This is the combined unit...

You would still require discs and hub assembly hoses etc... and rear drums would be my recomendation
