Hi all,

This may end up a long post with multiple questions & some advice from my end thrown it for good meassure.

I have a 1973 Mini Clubman which is currently being rebuilt - 20141201_152708.jpg

A lot of panels have holes and rust riddled so i decided was quicker and eaiser to just cut out and replace so the ordering spree began. The car was re-sprayed before i bought the car back in 1992/93 the original colour is that horrible pea soup green :X

So the logbook states the car is red and i wanted to stay with red. With all the new panels to go on i thought it would be a great idea to buy in some spray cans to get all the inner wings, inside rear quarter panels and all the places out of site but would benifit from a coat of paint to keep everything rust free. So i hunted around for a cheap rattle can supplier to mix some colour for me. (Now bear in mind here i only wanted rattle cans to do the insides which would give me time to get setup with a comperssor).

So i found www.hsautopaint.co.uk

I went with Singal Red as the colour -

So the order was -

400ml mixed colour aerosol
Vehicle Colour Information Colour Code: BS 381C – Signal Red 537
Vehicle Colour Information Vehicle Make: layland
Vehicle Colour Information Vehicle Model: mini
Vehicle Colour Information Basic Colour Description: signal red
Vehicle Colour Information Vehicle Year: 1973
Vehicle Colour Information Vehicle reg: L 10 £89.50

plus shipping etc came to £92.50 *ouch*

Ok maybe i was going to far but for a rust free, all panels water tight i could live with that.

Now a few weeks went by while i sorted panels and other bits out on the car. I thought i would do a small tester to see how well the cans sprayed so the rear number plate light holder came to mind. The result -

IMAG0046.jpg

The bottom colour is the current colour on the roof.

~ hmm

so clearly this is not "signal red" i double checked the info i gave on the order (see above) *BS381C reference website here - http://www.e-paint.c...Colourchart.asp

colour code 537

Now this seems to be more like the next colour down *557 which is Light orange

So i e-mailed hsautopaint and gave all information i could and showing the above picture. A week later and still no reply so we decided to ring them. Info was taken with my phone number and a promise to get back to me the same day. Nothing. The next day phoned again and was told the guy to deal with this was on lunch (at 2pm) and my info was taken again, and was told i will get a call when he was back. Nothing.

I will be investing in a compressor which will be soon so dont really want to spend any more money on rattle cans. So if anyone wants 10x light orange for a cheaper price let me know.

Moral of the story dont jump feet first and buy a buttload of paint without see'ing a tester first and from a good company *which HS Auto Paint is not (avoid avoid avoid).

So now im stuck with paint which is the wrong colour, £90 lighter in my wallet and no clue what my next step should be *HELP*

What would you do

Who supplied this info?: Vehicle Colour Information Colour Code: BS 381C – Signal Red 537

1973 Leyland Signal Red is RD02 BLVC 258 CDF

(Dupont 8543, PPG 2792, ACME 90441)

Can't find a cross reference for a BS number anywhere- hopefully someone else will & if they have given you the wrong cross reference number you should be looking at getting your money back.

Looks like you've bought Triumph Signal Red (Paint Code 32)

http://www.blyth.us/

Edit: They also did MInis in a Signal Red in 1988 (BVLC 748)

Not good. Phone every day, morning not late, politest voice ever, but just make yourself a damn nuisance! It looks pretty clear you're in the right, so it's just stall tactics on their side. Once they get a hint that you're not going to disappear, I suspect they'll give in!
