Right so the car currently  has a steering column lowering bracket fitted. I can barely fit my legs under the steering wheel to get in, so i want to remove the lowering bracket, is it as simple as removing and adjusting the height back to somewhere more useable. there are plenty of topics with adding the bracket but none for removing. Car has a Metro turbo engine fitted if that makes a difference. Thanks in advance.

basically just remember to loosen the rack nuts so that it can also rotate. (there are no flex joints between column and rack). and then tighten them up last.

Almost. Remove the lowering bracket to bolt the column back to where it would have originally been, however you must also loosen the 2 'U bolts' that hold the rack in place so the rack can rotate and obviously tighten back up.

Right, so, it appears that moving the column up is not necessarily an option. The hole seems to have no space for movement, or is that normal??

The column moves up at the steering wheel end only, the bottom of the column still goes through the same hole. This will require the rack to rotate hence the need to slacken the U bolts.

You should be loosening off the 2 U clamps that sit at each end of the rack....  you will ONLY be able to see 2 nuts at each end as the U clamp sits underneath the floor, the pinch bolt should not need to be touched.

 

If you do this job wrong you could be endangering your own and others lives !!!

The 2 nuts to the left of the column and the "mirrored" pair the other side, just need to be loosened enough to freely rotate the rack
