Hello to all! I have been monitoring the boards for a while, but this is my first post. I have a 78 mini and have been having clutch problems. Mostly, the clutch will not disengage and hold (to shift, or at stops) untill the very very last bit of travel of the pedal. This has been going on for a while. now, it will not disengage at all. I have tried all of the adjustments to no avail. I have inspected the master and slave cylinders and can find no external leaks, and have bled the system to no end. My question is this....

How much travel(movement) is normal on the cluch pushrod coming out of the slave cylinder during a full stroke of the pedal?

I am getting about 1/4" (from center of pin at no pedal, to center of pin after full pedal push), which translates to barely anything at the throw out bearing end. I assume that this is not enough, but am not sure if I should blame the slave or the master. again, no external leaks, and if you hold the pedal, the pushrod does not bleed down. If you pump the pedal a few times, I get just less than 1/2", so that tells me it is a hydraluic issue, just wondering about which one to suspect, or just rebuild them both... any input/replies would be great,

What mileage is the car? Do you know if the clutch/engine is original?

I suspect the flexible clutch hose has gone.

The engine had allegedly been rebuilt about 1000 miles before I bought it. The engine is fairly clean looking, but I suspect the hose is original. So you are thinking that the rubber section of hose is "balooning"? I will look tonight to see if I can see anything there. That would be great if that was the only problem. So no one has answered my original question though....

How much travel is considered "normal?"

I would say the clutch should 'bite' after about half the pedal travel.
