Hi guys and Gals of the wonderous TMF!

Now After a hectic peak season I now have something I believe they call free time... and so I have decided it'd be a great time to restart project "Twuck".
Now, The Twuck was shelved pre Christmas (October) due to work commitments, and a lack of motion from the Engine.

Basically having attempted firing her up today I have made a list of what's happening.

Power: Check
Fuel :(A little old) Check

Fuel to fuel pump: Check
Fuel to carb: Check

Fuel to spark plugs: Check
Power to starter: Check
Power to Ignition Coil: Check
Power to Points: Check

So we have fuel and electricity to where it needs to be but no go! Engine turns over nice and easy but no final umph! I am desperate. So desperate that if anyone is willing to travel to help I am willing to pay in love kindness and beer money... and beer. or cider... Anyway I am in Taunton, J25 M5 and would love to know what you think might be the issue.... Take into account that this was the issue that garaged him in the first place....
Oh and if you would like to know what a "Twuck" looks like, hes basically a Nomad Foers, a 2 seater, Pick up, and Tipper! A bit of fun indeed.... and with a lot of various ideas in hand if this engine plan doesn't go... I have a small diesel waiting in the wings......  Anywho heres a photo.....

Cheers in advance!

my first thought -

you are wasting your time , until you have fresh fuel in it & confirm fuel flow is good

also with the points closed & ign on , with something insulated , open the points & look for a spark at coil - should hear a click

if good - start looking at rotor arm / cap / leads

very nice little motor - I would go the full zombie apocalypse/ mad max on that

diesel sounds like a good plan for it as well

Put a cap of juice straight down the carb throat if it fires and conks its fuel if it don't fire it's ignition. Simple but effective.

+1

make sure it's freshly squeezed from the pump (known good)

If fuel checks don't get a result then next check ignition for:

- spark at plugs, take out and spin over looking for spark at each one

- static timing set about 5 deg btdc to get it going

- plug leads all in correct order

And final check on fuel, is choke operating properly?

Take into account that this was the issue that garaged him in the first place....

More info needed on when and how there was a problem before, if it would not start in the past it suggests that it is not stale fuel.
if you have fuel at the plugs and if the spark plugs are sparking (you did not mention this) then its timing or a compression problem, have you checked compression levels?

This is why I love TMF!
Lots of knowledge from everywhere.

Anyway to Engine..So things I have done/ will do over the next 48 hours....
1.) Drain the fuel and replace with freshly squeezed pump stuff (tomorrow)

2.) Spark at coil is good, (today) but I have a new coil to go on anyway. (tomorrow)
3.) While points are new and shiny, and all sparked when checked (today), new leads will also be placed on. (tomorrow)
4.) Carb was almost swimming in fuel when I was trying it earlier (today).... almost like it wasn't going to the engine.... when I took the air filter off I gained a small puddle of old juice on the floor...... (very small but noticeable) does this suggest something carb related maybe??
5.) unable to check compression levels as not that technologically advanced... limited tools!

Back to an old story, of what happened...... back in the day he used to run like a dream, noisy and unique.

Filled up at Morrisons Bridgwater and by the time I got 4 miles down the motorway I started losing power.

From a good 70mph, the max speed I could keep it on was 60, then 50, then 40.....

Up to the point when I stopped, waited for 5 minutes, then we were off again. Back to 60 before we started losing power again.

It was like the car was struggling to keep turning over.

When putting my foot on the accelerator it as like the car was going to cut out, so had to fruglely touch the accel pedal all the way home.

Eventually got home. Immediately replaced fuel. But made no difference. Cleaned carb, fuel pump, fuel lines, but seemed to make 0 difference.

Compression.....??? Does it seem to be the agreed issue.....?? When trying him now its like it semi fires every 8 turns of the starter, but never gets going....
What say ye good peoples??

Cheers in advance....
PS, May throw this laptop out soon, most of what I have typed has taken 30 minutes....

as everything seems to start getting typed perfectly backwards siht ekil tib (bit like this) ARGH!!!!!

a compression gauge is cheap - & a valuable tool ,

well worth getting

when it was running were you getting a ticking sound - getting louder , could be the start of a head gasket (just a guess)

this would lead to a gradual power loss & poor starting

is it using water or oil or mixing them ?

http://www.ebay.co.u...24AAOSwiylXAU3z

this one looks a bit too cheap - but it may be enough to find the problem

Not using water or oil other than what it should do and where it should be. No ticking noise, just standard a series whine and tappet tapping! Power loss was over a 3 mile stretch, very instantaneous and ungradual....

Diesel in tank, put the wrong fuel in would fit the effects of what happened.
