So I have a standard 998cc engine, wanted to add a bit more power say a 5 or 7 port head. I wanted to know if using a port head would I have to do any alterations to the engine. Or could I just bolt on the port engine?

You already have a5 port head.
There aren't any modifications needed when fitting a 998 ported head. A 1275 head or 7 port one will require some modifications, a 7 port is also very expensive.
To get the best out of an engine I always change te cam with the head
.

First modification would be to change the engine to a 1275 then you can do what you want in the future

You can buy a Gas flowed and ported cylinder head for your 998 if you want to and get the valve size increased but it really does depend on what YOU want to do. Or pay someone to do this work for you.
Nothing to stop you sticking a seven port head on your 998 either and with other mods turn it into a real screamer. BUT again it boils down to cost and what YOU want from your car.
You can add a stage one kit to get a reasonable power increase for your 998, don't expect a huge amount but you will notice a difference.
You can fit a 1275 cylinder head to your car but this will mean you will need to pocket the block for the valves. With a camshaft upgrade this will liberate more power but not a huge amount.
So at the end of the day what's yours budget, what do you really want to achieve power wise. These are the sort of questions you need to ask yourself.

to be honest I would be pulling the engine and do a full rebuild.
The number of issues you mention suggest that it is getting to that time.
So you have the chance to warm it up a bit with a suitable cam and a head to suit.

I wouldnt throw all that money on a 998 if its power you are after, which it seems you are. If so, you need to have at least a 1275 as your base engine and modify that. There's no substitute for cubic inches. You can pay a fortune on upgrading a 998 and it'll still only be as quick as a 1275 that has very few modifications.
