How do I go about removing and refitting the clutch oil seal( orange) on my metro 1275 A+ engine, I have the housing off on the bench, which way does it come out, the Haynes manual says to use special tools, is it possible to do without them. Thanks Martin.

It will only come off one way, which is towards the end of the crankshaft, because the housing has a lip on the inner edge.
You can dig it out with a screwdriver. Re-fitting is easier if you have the correct tool, but it is not difficult if you don't have one.
Lightly oil the outside diameter of the seal, make sure it is the correct way round with the flat side outwards, and lightly push it into the housing to initially line it up.
It needs to go in very square until the outer face of the seal is about 0.010" in from the housing face. If you have a piece of steel tube this diameter it will help, but if not use a small mallet to tap it in, being careful to keep it square as you do this.
When sliding the seal over the splines of the primary gear, use masking tape over the splines to prevent the splines from damaging the lip of the seal.

Really? I've never noticed on any any casing. If that was the case then surely the insertion tool wouldn't be designed to lust push the seal far enough, as it would have a register to seat it against?
I'm pretty sure that is the casing is on the bench I've always knocked them through backwards, with a blunt drift or suitable socket against the outer face.

or buy or loan one of these takes 5 secs to fit in the engine.

I bought the same tool from Somerford Minis, made the job very, very simple. I had/have a couple to change so the cost-per-job wasn't so bad.
