I've bought magnum panels for my front end - I know I will need to take the coating off but what thinners are good? Wilko sell a tiny botyle of cellulose thinners but would end up spending more than the panels cost!

You'll pick up 4 litres of Standard Cellulose thinners from your local Professional Car Paint suppliers (NOT HALFORDS) for about £10 so don't go buying little bottles - you've obviously worked out that its expensive that way.

Ask for gun wash thinners too, its cheaper than the thinners used for mixing celly.

Probably just as easy to rub it off with a grey or red scotchbrite pad, this will give a nice key to the metal as well. Or even run over it with a da.

Literally done this last week. I bought 5 litres of gun wash/celly thinners for, I think, about £12 from my local paint shop. This and some rag and it came clean off. Took about a 2 minutes to do both rear quarters. Just key up the panel after!

Make sure you take it all off. Thinners is the way to go and use a scotchbrite pad as well. Get it right into all of the nooks and crannies.

Does the coating on heritage come off as easy? Still the same method as above?

The coating on heritage is far superior and if no evidence of rust underneath is wise to leave the ecoat on

The Heritage coating is far far better but as mentioned you do need to inspect it for spider tracks of rust. I have had two panels like that so always worth giving them a good key.

So why don't we - as an influential body of Mini restorers - make a mass complaint to Magnum to do a decent job of painting - even if it cost more!!!!

All its supposed to be is storage protection nothing more. The Heritage coating is pretty much the same. Don't rely on it to be perfect. And to be honest i don't want to pay more for Magnum panels unless the quality improves big style.

10 mins removing crap paint off a new panel is no big deal and at least you know then you wont have any issues further down the road.
