Hi everyone. I think I have an earthing problem so I'm going round and cleaning up connections etc. I've just taking the cable off of the starter motor and noticed that the bolt/stud moves and wiggles in the hole. Is it supposed to do that? Thanks

The starter motor earths through its casing into the transfer gear casing and then via the engine earth lead into the body and thus to the battery.

The 12 volt feed cable into the starter should attach to a threaded post in the starter end cover which does need to be firmly attached.

Ok thanks. When the nuts are on the threaded post it is secure. It was only when I took them off I noticed it pushed into the casing and wriggled about. Also the first washer that was on there wasn't metal. Is that normal?

One nut stays to secure the post, the other secures the cable to the post against the first nut. Fibre washer OK. Don't spin the stud or you may break the connection inside.

Also when reconnecting the heavy feed cable to the starter motor terminal post make sure the insulating sleeve has not stretched and is getting caught between the nut/washer and the cable lug.

The starter does not work at well if this happens, it will turn engine over but sluggish, bit like a bad earth...
