Today was the first ever start of my new mini engine and after fiddling about with the timing and checking i had oil pressure i cranked it a few times to get the fuel pumped from tge jerry can, then i poured a bit in the intake of the carb for good measure, i turned the key and it fired straight up, but then died, i did the same again 5 times in a row and would only run on the fuel i poured in, tge carb is a hs4 which ran fine before the engine rebuild, any help would be great!

Fuel pump definitely working? If it runs with fuel in the intake it's probably a fuel delivery problem - blocked fuel line, pump problem, etc.

It has a brand new fuel pump and pumps fuel out of the pipe to the carb very quickly! Also brand new fuel pipes and brand new filter so dont think its that, thanks for reply though

Timing out? Have you set the Valve clearances set roughly? I'd check that the jet etc is clear on the carb

I'm having an issue getting my car to start also, I got a post from dklawson which what he said to me may help you: this is quoted from him:

Try either the starting fluid or a thimble of gasoline down the carb throat. If either allows the engine to fire to life briefly and die, your car has a fuel problem. Yes, fuel may be getting to the carb but that does not say it is getting in the carb. In the carb there is a float valve that may be stuck closed from a year of sitting. There is also the possibility that the carb itself is "stuck" from a year of sitting. Try using your finger through the carb throat to lift the piston. Also inspect the carb needle and jet to make sure they are not gummed up with fuel varnish that might be sticking things together.

It is not timing since you got the engine to run briefly.  It is not the fuel pump as you said your delivery through the pipes was confirmed.

You said this is an HS4 carb.  Remove the float bowl lid.  You are almost guaranteed to find the float bowl is empty or near empty.  The problem is likely to be a stuck float valve in the lid and/or a very badly out of adjustment float valve.

Id try tapping the float bowl with the handle of a screwdriver to see if that frees it up, then try again

i'm having a similar problem with not being able to get my mini to run after being stood for Afew months, starts up on the button when fuel poured down the throat or with easy start but then dies, have checked the float in the float bowl and no problems, plenty of fuel in the chamber, have also lifted up the piston and falls nicely with a solid clunk, any ideas please

Blocked jets maybe?

Sounds fuel/carb related

Yes I was wondering that, just wondered before I took it apart and stripped it down, seems odd as it was serviced, fully disassembled and cleaned then rebuilt by a specialist just before being out away
